Watchfulness within the grounds.
Our name draws inspiration from the historical Oniwaban, the “garden keepers” of Japan’s Edo period. They served under the shogun and carried out information-gathering duties. Niwaban takes the idea of care for a protected space into a modern setting.
“Protect your digital garden” is our brand interpretation. It describes what we want the product to make possible: useful technology, clear boundaries and confidence about who has access.

A working idea in 2012.
A new chapter in 2026.
James Tervit traces the project back to 2012, when he built and demonstrated the original system to banks and industry audiences. His question was direct: why should a phone moving between places keep the same access everywhere?
James calls his hardware-and-software loading approach birational loading. In the hardware-security approach he describes, a device-specific physical fingerprint helps bind approved software to its intended hardware. The aim is stronger resistance to copying and tampering as protection passes from hardware into software.
This is a founder-described research approach. Its implementation, fault resistance and availability on each device need technical validation. It is distinct from the location-based application controls demonstrated by the Android MVP.
That ambition became tangible at the screen: selected application icons could disappear inside a defined zone and return when access was permitted. Screen-level geofencing remains central to the Niwaban story, making a location rule visible in the way a person uses their phone.
James reports that he has now updated the codebase for 2026 requirements. The next step is to demonstrate that refreshed code on the customer’s selected devices and existing management estate, with platform coverage and applicable standards confirmed through testing.

From a quiet room

Today, information travels through phones, watches and connected spaces. The same device can move from a public street into a confidential meeting without changing the permissions its applications hold.
Niwaban makes place part of that policy discussion. An enrolled device enters a selected zone. The customer’s approved policy determines which supported apps and features may operate there. When the context changes, access can change with it.
The original Android MVP demonstrated the central idea: selected app icons appeared and disappeared with selected zones. A paid deployment engagement configures and verifies the refreshed implementation with the chosen phones, watches and existing management service.
